Sioux Falls is South Dakota’s largest city and features an array of parks for relaxation and recreation. Over 70 parks and greenways are spread out across the city. Falls Park is a very well-known area in the city and it is here where locals and visitors can enjoy its famous waterfalls, relax, hike and picnic in the area. McKennan and Terrace Park are other great options for a day spent with the family. The park system features paved trails where you can cycle, jog or walk. Great Bear Recreation Park offers winter activities in the form of ski trips, snowboarding and tubing. Outdoor Campus offers star gazing activities for both young and old.
If indoor activities are more your style, the astonishing and beautiful St. James cathedral is a great day trip as is the Washington Pavilion of Arts and Science. For a road trip, The Corn Palace is located in nearby Mitchell and is a folk art icon. It is decorated with various murals, made from 12 different colours of corn. These murals are framed with straw, grass, rye and sour dock. This “shrine” to the agriculture in the area is uniquely American and worth visiting. Sioux Falls gets its name from the Sioux Native American tribe which once made its home in the area. The Kirby Science Discovery Center will allow you a glimpse into the natural history of the area, while the Sertoma Butterfly house will give you the chance to see more than 800 free-flying butterflies.
Since it is an inland city, Sioux Falls has a humid, continental climate. This results in hot, humid summers and cold, dry winters. Temperatures in January to July can go below freezing and snowfalls do occur in the city. Snowfall is considered light to moderate. Most rain falls during the humid summer months and February temperatures have been known to go as low as -47 degrees Fahrenheit. Since the winter months can be very cold, peak season in the city is during the summer, when temperatures can reach 89 degrees fahrenhiet.
The cheapest time to visit Sioux Falls is during the winter months of December to February when most people are avoiding the city due to the extreme cold. However some people like to spend the Christmas period skiing, tubing and snowboarding, making this a popular choice during the Christmas holiday. Prices during the summer, festive and school holiday period are likely to be higher than the rest of the year.
The city offers a fixed route bus service, for those who prefer this mode of transport from the airport or for sightseeing. For the most convenient way of exploring the city in your own time, car rental is the best option.
