Muscat is Oman’s capital, and as its largest city and the seat of its government it promises the traveler many different things to see and do. This vibrant and ancient city is home to some truly stunning mosques. If you only visit one, then why not make it Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, with its majestic architecture and elegant gardens? Head down to Qurum beach to experience some gorgeous white sands, palm trees, and perfect sunbathing weather. Visit Qurum Natural Park for a wonderful family-friendly day out, and check out the Amouage Perfumery on your way to see some of the fabulous perfumes for which this region of the world is so famous. Muscat is also home to some fascinating museums, such as the Sultan’s Armed Forces Museum and the Ghalya’s Museum of Modern Art. When it comes to food and drink, too, you are spoilt for choice by the restaurants, cafes, and market stalls dotted throughout downtown.
The most temperate time to visit Muscat is actually during the winter. Between the months of October and March, the temperatures range between 59 and 86 degrees F, enabling you to enjoy some heat without being stifled so that you can explore the city and the beach to the full. In the summer months, temperatures reach around 113 degrees, which can make sightseeing more difficult. Travel during the more popular winter season is often more expensive, though many people think it is worth it, and it is still possible to get cheap deals. But if you like the heat at its hottest, July and August are the best months to go – just make sure to protect yourself well against the sun rays. To see the city at its best, why not visit during one of the many festivals that occur there? For example, the Muscat Festival happens every year, usually in February, and lasts a whole month showcasing arts, music, and other cultural delights.
Most of the main downtown sights can be explored on foot, and when the weather is temperate, this can be the most pleasant option. Otherwise, hop on a tour bus, flag a taxi, or rent yourself a car and away you go.
