Kamloops may be a small city, but it offers a lot of sporting and cultural attractions, as well as some fine skiing resorts and summer hiking trails that provide truly breathtaking views.
Located in Canada’s British Columbia province, the city is ideal for active vacationers. Swim and relax at the beach which fronts onto the Thompson River, play golf, head out to climb the many nearby cliffs or rent a mountain bike and hit the trails. Visitors can book riding lessons at nearby ranches, or just hike through glorious wooded hills.
When the snow comes, Kamloops may have even more to offer. Rent snowmobiles and follow well-marked trails or take the chairlift up Harper Mountain with rented skis and descend some of British Columbia’s best slopes. The city even hosts a special Winter Wine Festival which takes place in January, allowing total relaxation after a day spent cross country skiing or snow-shoeing.
There are also some superb museums and galleries to enjoy when the weather lets you down. The Kamloops Museum showcases the many indigenous cultures in the region, while the Secwepemc Museum provides a window into the homes and culture of the Shuswap people. For art lovers, there is also the Hampton Gallery, which displays the finest Canadian modern artists, while theater and cinema fans are also well served by the city.
The scenery around Kamloops is one of the town’s great attractions, but you don’t have to endure tiring hikes or take to a bike to enjoy the views. Helicopter rides take off from the town and soar high above the rivers and trees, while you can even rent segways to get around the city. For photography fans, expert tours can also be booked which show you the finest viewpoints, allowing visitors to take the best vacation snaps possible.
Kamloops is a destination which can be visited both in the winter months (November to March) and the summertime (June to September). In the winter, the ski season dies down a bit in March, presenting the chance of securing bargain accommodations. May is another great time to go, with mild weather that is ideal for outdoor pursuits.
Kamloops has a good transit system which covers all of the town itself. Remember that you can secure discounts by buying larger amounts of tickets in one go. Renting bikes is a great way to see the surrounding countryside, but a rental car will be essential to get the most out of your stay.
