Elmira has a humid continental climate which is defined by four seasons that include hot summers from May to September and cold winters with regular snowfall from December to February. The peak period coincides with the summer months of May to September and July temperature are generally around 28C with a rise in humidity. Flights are more expensive at this time of year as school and college holidays mean an influx of visitors who are attracted by the town’s proximity to the Finger Lakes region.
A pleasant alternative to peak season is the shoulder season months of March to May when spring comes to Elmira and foliage begins to appear after the winter snows. It is mild, with temperatures of approximately 15C by April and flights to Elmira are less costly. The fall foliage also brings visitors to this scenic part of New York state, and from October through November you can take advantage of deals on shoulder season flights, and with temperatures still as high as 10C in November it is comfortable and mild.
Low season is from early December until the end of February when dropping temperatures and snowy conditions mean that the city is less busy. However, with the exception of the Christmas period, it is a great time to look for cheap flights to Elmira.
