Located in the exciting Cameroon, and its largest city, the vibrant city of Douala offers a great number of landmarks and attractions for travelers to enjoy visiting during their African holiday. Authentic food, drink, crafts, art and music all permeate this city and a range of day tours and trips will keep you and the family busy, until the sun begins to set. A drive to the mountainside town of Buea via Limbe, allows you to view the highest village on Mt. Cameroon. Buea is an old town with some old colonial German buildings and a great view of Mt Cameroon. When it comes to art the uniquely African La Nouvelle Liberte is a statue made from recycled materials and placed on a roundabout.
At the Marche des Fleurs you will find about 50 to 100 stalls selling items such as local souvenirs and art and crafts from Congo and Gabon. Here, you can haggle over prices so if you see something you really like, you can get the best possible deal if you stick to your offer. There are many wood products on offer as well as wicker furniture. It is also a flower market where you can buy freshly cut flowers for the vase. The Limbe Wildlife Center is located close by and houses several species of monkeys, an alligator and snakes.
Douala’s climate is tropical monsoon, which ensures constant yearly temperatures of around 86 degrees F. The weather is generally warm and humid with a humidity level of round about 85%. About 3 600 mm of rain falls throughout the year. While it may rain all year round, December sees less rain with a rainfall of 28 mm. On the other side of this spectrum rain is plentiful during August and around 700 mm falls in the city.
The high rainfalls during August deter local and international travelers, making this the off-peak season in the region. The warm weather and low rainfall during December, coupled with the festive holiday season make this possibly the busiest time of the year in Douala. For the cheapest rates, avoid the school holiday peak times and festive season periods as well as local festival dates, as these usually see a notable increase in hotel rates and airfares. Despite the rainfall during August, July and September offer warm weather and lower rates on accommodations and food.
Once in the city, buses, private rental cars and taxis will get you around and to neighbouring cities. The Cameroon rail service runs from Douala to a number of destinations in Cameroon.
